Guerlain started as a perfume house when its founder, Pierre-Francois Paschal Guerlain, established it in 1828. Guerlain, though more interested in creating hygiene products, was making perfumes for its clients before he founded his company.

The fashion house of Yves Saint Laurent was founded by a young man, known as Yves Henri Donat Mathieu Saint Laurent, in the early 1960s. The Goutal house of fragrances was opened in 1980 by Annick Goutal, who was a pianist and a model. Besides being a model and musician, Annick also owned an antique shop, Folavil, which closed shortly after it was launched.
