Different Floral Perfumes

When we talk of floral perfumes, we talk of perfumes that smell like flowers. Some may not smell exactly like a flower because perfumers usually blend different scents in one bottle but they exhibit floral notes to show that flowers are one of their major ingredients.

However, if perfumers decide to create floral perfumes, they will make the floral scents overshadow the other scents blended into the perfume.

You may need to know now that floral perfumes smell differently. This depends on the main accords the perfumes have (we will discuss the main accords later). Below, you will find the different categories of floral perfumes, according to the type of flowers they represent.

  • Green Floral perfumes: This is also known as the spring or vegetable flowers because they add vegetable or green notes to perfumes. They can remind you of spring even though their smells are not strong. Examples of flowers in this family are:
    • Narcissus
    • Daffodil
  • White Floral perfumes: The flowers that give this kind of note have sensual fragrances. They include:
    • Jasmine
    • Ylang-ylang
    • Tuberose
    • Tiare flower
    • Frangipani
    • Lily
    • Gardenia
    • Orange Blossom
    • Magnolia
  • Powdery Floral perfumes: The flowers under this category include:
    • Mimosa
    • Iris
    • Cassie
    • Heliotrope
    • Violet
  • Spicy Floral perfumes: The flowers here include:
    • Wallflower
    • Carnation
    • Immortal
  • Rosy Floral perfumes: Well, it’s not all rosy fragrances that come from rose flowers. The flowers that give this scent include:
    • Rose
    • Peony
    • The Rose Geranium
  • Yellow Flowers: We have quite a large number of flowers in this family. Some of them are:
    • Daffodil
    • Sunflower
    • Rose
    • Tulips
    • Marigold

Understanding some Technical Terms

Before we go on to bring the perfumes we want to review here, we will want to look into some technical terms related to perfumes. These terms are the major pointers we will use to describe the perfumes we want to present to you. The terms in question are:

  • Main accords
  • Notes
  • Longevity
  • Sillage

Perfume’s Main Accords

The main accords of perfumes give you a picture of what the perfume smells like. They tell stories about perfumes. In fact, if you can get the main accords of a particular perfume, you will be able to tell how the perfume can influence your senses (the five of them).

For instance, if the main accord of a particular perfume is white floral, the scent of the perfume will be sensual as well as remind you of a garden filled with flowers, such as jasmine, tuberose, ylang-ylang, and other flowers that fall under the white floral category. If the accord is citrusy, know that the perfume will rejuvenate you as well as create a picture of the citrus fruit that dominated the fragrance. This is why the main accords of any perfume are regarded as the story the perfume tells.

Another thing about the main accords of a perfume is that they help you to detect the notes it contains. For instance, if you see that the perfume has a floral main accord, it will tell you that the fragrance contains rose, peony, or any other flower that has a rosy floral tune.

In other words, if you understand the fragrances that form different main accords, you will know what to expect from every perfume. In this review, we’re looking out for the different floral notes so you can use the different floral fragrance families we described above to detect what the perfumes have to offer you.

Perfume Notes

When we talk of the notes of perfumes, we refer to the depth of fragrances perfumes contain. By this depth, we mean the scents (or scent) of the perfume that is noticeable. Every good perfume has natural identifiable scents they give off. If this isn’t possible, the perfume isn’t well formulated.

But there is something about perfume notes you need to know. In most cases, good perfumes aren’t made to release their scents at the same time. Some good perfumers create perfumes to release their scents in three batches that come one after the other. This means that a batch of scents will not be activated if the predecessor is still active. This is one of the marvels of perfumes.

Understanding how these perfume scents are released will help you to understand why the scents are not the same from the moment you sprayed to the time you changed or retouched them. If you spray perfume, you may notice that the fragrance you received immediately after the spritz is not the same as the one you smelled on your clothes or body some hours later.

Some people think they were cheated out of their money because the shops sold them fake perfumes but that is not the case. The truth is, your perfume has three sets of notes (as we stated earlier). These notes are released (or activated) as:

  • Top notes
  • Middle notes
  • Base notes

We will explain these sets of notes and their characteristics one after the other.

Perfume’s Top Notes

The top notes of any perfume (also known as the head notes) are the first set of scents (or just a scent) that is released the moment a perfume is sprayed. These scents are usually strong, invigorating, enticing, and loud because that’s the job they’re meant to do. Top notes are like the enticers that are meant to attract a buyer or a passerby to pick a bottle of perfume. So, when you’re hooked by the top notes of the perfume you want to buy, just know that the scents have done their duty.

But, there’s something about the top notes of any perfume that you should know about. As stated earlier, these fragrances have special duties to perform. They are the reasons perfumers sell their products. If they are not appetising, you will not want to pick the perfume.

For instance, imagine that you opened a bottle of perfume and sprayed its content only to receive an awful smell. I bet you won’t look at that bottle again. Compare this experience to when the first set of fragrances is citrusy, coffee, sweet, or vanilla. So, you can see that perfumers strategically use inviting top notes for their fragrances.

Another crucial thing about top notes is that they don’t last long. Usually, they last for five to ten minutes (sixteen minutes max) before they deactivate. But because your senses have already been influenced and saturated by the main accords and notes from the top notes, you may not notice when it deactivated for the next set of fragrances to come on board.

The truth is, there is no defined line that demarcates when the top notes dissipate and when the middle ones come up. You will just realise that your perfume no longer smells as you thought it does. Hope this helps you to understand why that perfume smells differently after some hours (it actually changes or switches smell after 15 minutes).

Here is a tip about avoiding the lure of top notes: never pick a bottle of perfume because of its top notes. Even if you love the scents, wait for the middle notes to be activated. You may be in love with the top notes but disappointed with the middle notes.

Perfume’s Middle Notes

The middle notes of a perfume are its heart. This is why the middle note is also known as the heart note. This set of fragrances is what keeps you company the moment the top notes complete their jobs and leave you. They come on board about ten minutes after you sprayed your perfume.

They are the scents people smile or frown at when they come in contact with you. When people say your perfume smells good (or not so good), they are referring to your middle notes. This set of fragrances can stay with you for hours. In fact, when we talk about the longevity of any perfume, we, technically, refer to its middle notes (though not in all cases). Usually, the middle notes can last up to five hours or more, depending on the perfume.

If you are going for any bottle of perfume, check its review so you can discover its middle notes. In as much as we need the top notes to rejuvenate us while we spray perfumes, we need to go for perfumes with the middle notes we love. If you remember that the middle notes will keep you company for hours, you’ll not have a choice but to go for perfumes that will offer you what you wanted.

Perfume’s Base Notes

The base notes of perfumes can be likened to the best friends that come across when you’re in a fix. Remember, the top notes will leave you a few minutes after you sprayed or applied your perfume. The middle notes will also desert you when it’s done after a few hours.

When the top and middle notes leave, you would be left to sort yourself out. If you have your bottle of perfume with you, you can retouch to keep yourself fresh. But if you don’t, you can only rely on your perfume’s base notes to keep you covered until you’re able to change or retouch your perfume. This is why you should go for perfumes with good and long-lasting base notes.

The base notes of your perfume can stay on you for as long as possible. If the perfume has long-lasting longevity, its base notes can last for days on your clothes and/or body until you wash your clothes or take your bath. However, this depends on the perfume since it’s not all of them that last that long. Hence, you have to consider the longevity of a perfume if you need it to stay long on you (especially on sweaty days).

Another thing you should consider regarding base notes is the fragrance. No one wants to smell what he doesn’t like on his clothes after a sweaty day. Some perfumers use spicy, woody, vanilla, and/or musky notes for their perfumes’ base notes but if you don’t like them, you should look for those that will offer you what you’ll like. This is why we will present the notes of the reviewed perfumes so you can decide what to go for.

Perfume’s Longevity

In as much as we want to smell good forever, we cannot make our perfumes do that magic without retouching them often. Some perfumes are designed to last longer than others. This depends on the components and formulation of the perfumes, the plans of the perfumers, and the desire of the customers.

People that don’t want perfumes to smell long on them go for those that don’t last too long while those that want to be covered for hours without retouching their perfumes go for those with long-lasting longevity. Everything, in most cases, depends on the demand of customers.

In this review, we will let you know the longevity of the reviewed perfumes. If the perfume’s longevity is very weak, it means the perfume can only last for 3 hours. If its longevity is said to be weak, know that the fragrance can last up to 4 hours on you.

Moderate longevity goes to perfumes that can last up to 5 or 6 hours while long-lasting longevity is used to describe those that last more than 7 or 8 hours. If we say that the perfume’s longevity is eternal, know that the perfume’s smell on you can last up to 12 hours or more. Remember, longevity here has to do with the middle notes and not the base notes.

Perfume’s Sillage

Sillage simply refers to the projection of perfumes. You must have noticed that some perfumes are too bold, loud, assertive, and ‘aggressive’ while others are too mild, soft, invisible, and subtle. The bold perfumes announce their wearers long before they appear. They also leave their scents behind long after their wearers have left the room.  Such bold and strong perfumes are said to have enormous sillage. They are not afraid to tell their stories to the world. If you’re someone that loves very bold perfumes, you should go for those with enormous sillage.

Some perfumes have bold projections that are considerate. They are not as aggressive as those with enormous sillage. They are like friends that understand there should be room for other perfumes to project their fragrances. Even though these perfumes have strong projections, they are not as extremely strong as the perfumes with enormous projections. The perfumes that belong to this group are said to have strong sillage.

Then, we have some perfumes with projections that are not too bold, too loud, or shy. They do not call attention to their wearers even though they keep them fresh. You can detect the perfumes with this quality on their wearers but the projection will be mild. Perfumes with this quality are said to have moderate sillage.

Finally, some perfumes keep their scents private. They don’t want other people to smell their fragrances on their wearers. You will have to come too close to the wearers to smell the perfumes on them. In most cases, perfumes in this category are valued by people that react negatively to strong perfumes.

If you would like to have a perfume of this quality, you should look out for those with intimate sillage. So, in this review, we will categorise the sillage of perfumes as enormous, strong, moderate, and intimate.

Did you make a choice?

We have presented you with the names of ten top-selling floral perfumes from good brands and also reviewed them for you. In addition, we gave you a list of bestselling perfumes from each brand, even though all of them are not floral perfumes. But we want you to have a list of good perfumes you can ask of when you go out to pick a bottle. The perfume you decide to buy is entirely your choice to make. However, remember to consider the following as you choose a bottle:

  • Test the perfume to be sure the sillage and fragrance are what you wanted.
  • Wait for the fragrance to dry down to the next set of scents before paying for the perfume. You can give it up to fifteen minutes to be sure the nice smell you perceived will not give way to the type you don’t want on your skin or clothes.
  • Always buy your perfumes from the right source.
